The II Mercator International Symposium, "Europe 2004: A new framework for all languages?" has concluded with a great success as to the number of participants (150 people) and with a very good evaluation by the organisers, the speakers and several people invited.

As expected, the symposium has been a forum of debate on the future of the European Union and in particular on the new language regime deriving from the adoption of the new European Constitution. The implementation of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages has also been object of debate.

The symposium ended with a speech by the president of CIEMEN and director of MERCATOR- LEGISLATION, Aureli Argemí, who highlighted the great amount of information provided and the need to reflect on the papers given, which dealt with linguistic diversity within the European legal framework. Thus, the closure of the symposium was an invitation to everyone to keep working in order to realise the title of the symposium, i.e. that Europe be in practice a new framework for all languages.
